Being a Mum

Parenting: Room to Become

I’m a mum to one boy, and being his mum has changed the way I see learning. He can become fascinated by something I would have walked straight past. He asks a question, looks closer, and before long we’re both seeing the world differently.

That’s part of why I’m an unschool mum. I want him to have room to seek out his interests and follow them. A question about a bird in the garden might lead us to a book, a walk, or an afternoon listening for its call. I love seeing where his curiosity takes him.

Connection comes first in our home. I listen to what matters to him, offer guidance when he needs it, and give him space to make choices of his own. He knows he can come to me with a new idea, a strong feeling, or a story he can hardly wait to tell. I want our relationship to be a place where he feels heard.

I hope he grows up knowing he can be curious, be wild, and be himself. He can try things, change direction, and discover what feels right for him. His life belongs to him. My role is to love him through it and help him build the confidence to find his own path.

Parenting this way asks me to stay open, too. I get to watch the person he is becoming, learn alongside him, and enjoy who he is today. There’s something freeing in that.

Most of all, I want my boy to know my love is unconditional. Wherever his journey leads, he has a mum who believes in him and will always be glad to hear what he’s discovered.
